Buying a second hand car from a dealer
Legally when you buy a car from a dealer, it doesn't matter if it's new or second hand, your rights are exactly the same. However, the difference when you buy a used car is that if a problem happens with it a month or so down the line, it's going to be much harder to prove that the dealer is responsible and get the issue redressed.
Any car bought must be fit for purpose – so if it's sold to you as being able to tow a caravan, then, it has got to be able to tow a caravan.
A car must also be as it's been described in any advert. So if they say in the advert that it's got a new cam belt and then it turns out not to have, that would be a false description and not legal.
Cars must also be of 'satisfactory quality' an awkward one, but basically this means it must be in reasonable condition for age and price, and that it should work.

Buying a second hand car from a private seller
Buying a car this way offers you as the buyer far less protection and rights. There are still some however which are worth knowing.
The car must belong to the person who is selling it.
The car must be roadworthy – so it should be possible to drive it away, and it mustn't be unsafe to do so.
Like with buying from a trader, the car must match the description given in any advertising.
What else to look out for
Dealers who pretend that they're private sellers – this is an illegal practice and should be reported. Check the log book, if it doesn't show them as the owner then they may be a trader posing as a private seller.
Look at the door locks – make sure they can all be opened with the same key – if they take different keys then there may have been damage or a break in at some point.
